EXCEPT: "Social media is also a great way to build up a business, but it can tear it down again just as quickly. Let’s go through some examples…"

Difficult to understand why big names of any profession put themselves at risk by expressing opinions and chattering arbitrarily with the public (specifically, this "outrage and shaming" arena). Obviously acting agencies and studio contracts compel their clients / employees to exploit social media. But beyond promoting themselves or _X_ project like a scripted robot, there seems little need to recklessly ad lib and exhibit human passion and beliefs to the degree that conventional (and especially anonymous) members do.

Those that are champions at making oodles of money -- by generating controversy and marketing their either engaging or combative personalities and surviving the consequences -- are an exception.

But in situations where one is part of a team, family, etc that's going to spiral down the drain with one due to one's ineptness at such community spectacles... Just keep playing Miss Congeniality, Madam Bot, Ms Digital Assistant, or Betty Elms (not Diane Selwyn!), and ignore the hecklers and other bait-traps; and resist impulses to jump on the soapbox.

The establishment and world of groupies isn't going to hand you (the potentially besieged celebrity) a trophy, anyway. For the pretentious nobility of being "authentic to who you are" or resisting Salinger-esque phony-hood... if you are not (again) a marketable type of self-righteous sphincter to begin with. (I.e., having broad appeal or at least triggering admiration from a large, influential faction of consumers.)
