What that N- means in a chemical formula

N- denotes attachment to nitrogen while n- denotes normal.

I was wondering because there was a toxic substance beginning with a formula beginning with N- that was not easily filterable with a carbon filter.

A semantic onerousness for case sensitivity there, rather than just the consequence of "error". In the earliest days, computers got to escape case sensitivity. But no longer across the board with programming languages these days.
