Alexa is possessed

"PHILADELPHIA (CNN) — It’s quiet in the house. Nobody else is home and the cat is fast asleep. Then you hear a disembodied woman’s voice let out a short, mocking cackle.

No, you’re (probably) not being haunted, it’s just Amazon’s Alexa voice assistant malfunctioning in a profoundly creepy way.

Some Alexa users have reported hearing an unprompted laugh from their smart speaker devices in the last day.

The laugh is three short “Ha” sounds in a female voice that actually doesn’t sound like Alexa’s normal voice. It happens randomly, when nobody is using the device, or in response to request to turn on or off lights.

“We’re aware of this and working to fix it,” Amazon said in a statement, confirming the issue. The company did not elaborate on what was causing the laugh or how widespread it is."

Since digital assistants can be hacked, the idea of one of them being "possessed" by a malicious infomorph (evil spirit) will be fully genuine someday. By all means let's continue designing every appliance and even furniture to be connected to a home network and the web, so that Alexa can enjoy being omniscient and omnipotent throughout the family abode.

The hack relies on the technology of the Echo to work, including those 7 microphones. They pick up a whisper, and in playback, the sound quality couldn’t be clearer. If this were repeated in a criminal setting, the sensitivity of those microphones would be a boon to anyone listening in. [...] There’s incentive to do this when potentially 11 million devices are out there in the wild that are vulnerable. That’s 11 million Amazon accounts - and other Alexa-linked accounts - that could prove to be valuable targets. Barnes tells me that once he’s gained access to the Echo, he’ll also be able to spread through the network it’s connected to, including your laptop and other smart devices.
