Satanic statue for Oklahoma's statehouse

Sounds like yet another mecca for ironically attracting more metalheads to that state. There's also an annual "Rocklahoma" festival that's been blasting away beside a rural Mennonite community since 2007.

Via some displaced Choctaw relatives who lived in the Cherokee Nation part of OK back then, I know that even 40 years ago there was an oddly contrasting mix of native headbangers and goat ropers in and around Tulsa who were extremely preoccupied with Led Zeppelin. An FM radio station with the call letters "KMOD" played them all the time (yep, it was deliberately intended to be pronounced "commode"). If LZ had returned just a few years after the 1970 concert, when they had fully achieved an almost deistic status there, they would literally have been overrun in a stampede of heavy metal zealots from the surrounding counties.

Tulsa, 1970: One of the first rock bands to play a 6 year old Maxwell Convention Center and deep in the heart of the conservative "bible belt" Led Zeppelin were greeted warmly by the capacity crowd, but no so much by the local authorities. Mid way into the set, arena management turned on the "house lights" allegedly because of widespread disregard for a selectively enforced "no smoking policy". There were a few scattered boo's as Robert announced that the band will not continue until the lights went down, a few moments later the lights went off to enthusiastic cheers and the show continued. In 1988 undercover Tulsa police officers arrested a record number of concert goers for minor possession charges at Robert's solo show. In a Tulsa World Interview TPD Spokespeople claimed that an unprecedented amount of resources had gone in to the effort and cited alleged incidents at the 1970 Led Zeppelin show as evidence that Robert Plant/Led Zeppelin fans were the "wrong element"...
