Apparently there's a blob of hot rock rising in the Earth's mantle below Vermont, New Hampshire and western Massachusetts. It's reminiscent of the hot-spots below Yellowstone and Hawaii. But since there's no visible sign of volcanism in New England and given the small lateral size of the new hotspot, they believe that it's a recent development. (In geological terms. It might have been slowly brewing for millions of years.)
It may well eventually result in volcanoes, but that might be millions of years off.
