EXCERPT: And yes.. A 100W LED is alot... It is approximately 9000 Lumen. A car on high beam produces about 4000. And that sums up why I made this. It's awesome! Let's get to it....

A 100w flashlight calls to mind a thought to check battery life. Many LED flashlights use two 1.5v alkaline batteries, but this one needs at least 3 since white LEDs generally need more than 3v. Lower power LED flashlights lately include a voltage booster to deal with that problem. A voltage booster that handles 100w would tend to be rather big for a flashlight.

3 AA batteries that are rated 2ah (ampere hour) would give 9wh (watt hour). An estimate of battery life considers that at high drain, much of the energy is lost internally as heat in the batteries. Without taking that into account, the life could be figured to be almost 1/10 an hour, but the internal loss could cut that in half. Also, there might be a danger that the batteries could blow up before they drain all the way.

If the power source were D cell, the life would be more than twice as long as for AA since the battery internal resistance that would turn some of the energy into heat would be lower and since alkaline D cells have about a 4ah rating.

Dorcy™ presently distributes a D cell LED flashlight that needs only a single D cell to operate. It reminds me of an earlier version of the concept by an unknown company that used just one AA cell. Both flashlights use an internal voltage booster.

I wonder what the lumens are for those spotlights on top of police cars.

I'm going to guess on the order of 10,000 lumens.
