Looking at the US National debt ... about $20,000,0000,000,0000 Source https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/National_d...States.png and the American population of 324,000,000 ( source https://www.census.gov/popclock/ ) and you get $61,538 owed (to whom?) by every living American. Rounding figures call it $100,000 for every adult American. Half of that debt has arisen within the last 20 years so that's a borrowing of about $5,000/year or (say) $10,000/year for a two person household. A Syne points out - "The only reason you can be poor in the US and still afford a smart phone and air conditioning is because it [the US economy] has worked...for many decades."
