What if one or both of the two kids rescued in the nick of time by Dad winds up being a mass murderer? As far as rescues go, he did an amazing job. Shit luck, fate, whatever you want to call it, without Dad those kids are more than likely dead.

I think we're touching on new topics of discussion, as macabre as it sounds: Are some folks better off dead? or Is society better off with some folks dead? Maybe Dad saw his bread and butter disappearing or he actually loved his kids so much he'd do anything to keep them safe. From just watching a video it is impossible to know.

Rainbow, as much as I love sarcasm, I hope you're just making a satirical comment and the above is not indicative of your jolly self. I think you're saying we should not worry about how many good rescues take place because there's more than enough bad shit to counter them.

Woah! I assumed you'd add other amazing rescues, not "what ifs". Who turned out the lights? The "what ifs" got pretty dark.
That was a pure uninhibited emotional response. No time to think. What if a bystander had shouted a warning? NO! Differing opinions could have inhibited his quick response. If rationality had intervened, they would be either dead or seriously injured.

All I was saying in post #2 was that there's no way of knowing if by saving a life that you've struck the death knell for others. The person saved could end up killing people, simple as that. So just as fate played a role in Dad performing the rescue, he unwittingly may have set in motion an event where others die. Then again, a rescue usually means someone lives as opposed to a rescue attempt that results in tragedy. Also people are rescued and the rescuer dies trying. Fact is there's no way to weigh the overall benefit of rescue unless it makes for a good story or hits home..... Case in point.... I have a sister. She has one child and when little Bill (not real name) was just a baby, my sis, husband and baby went for a ride on the Upper Niagara on a used boat a friend had just purchased. It was a good sized boat made of wood. On board with them was the happy couple who owned the boat. While out there with darkness setting in the boat's inboard motor stopped and they started drifting towards Niagara Falls, a long way off at this point. Engine stopped because boat was taking on water, theory is that the boat had dry rot. All their running lights went out and they eventually started the bumpy ride towards the brink. Fortunately there are some little islands just before the edge and the water wasn't too high because they divert a good chunk of it to make hydro at times. As the boat sank, all five managed to get through some shallow but fast water to one of the islands, my sister hanging on to little Bill best she could. The boat went over and smashed to bits in the darkness. Here they were on this little patch of dirt upstream about 200m from the mighty cataract, shivering in the cool spring air. No one had seen them in trouble but as luck would have it, an American Coast Guard officer just happened to look at the area they were in through binoculars and spotted the 5. After that they sent out a rescue team with the proper equipment to bring them all in safe and sound. Little Bill's all grown up now and as fate would have it, moved to the USA and became a citizen there. Hasn't murdered anyone as far as I know ![]() I never shut my boat motor off when I'm on the Upper Niagara and maybe it's because of that incident. |
