EXCERPT: Before you take your next trip, you might want to check with the non-profit organization Transparency International. Each year it surveys more than 145 countries and publishes a Corruption Perception Index. That list always has some surprises as to which countries are considered the most corrupt.

The countries are rated on a scale from 1 (least corrupt) to 167 (most corrupt). There are some instances where multiple countries tied with the same score. Some countries are not a surprise [...] but other destinations may pose direct threats to travelers....

How did Mexico avoid the top 10 most corrupt? I'll never set foot there again. I don't know how I avoided jail there .... Oh! maybe it was the bribe the police suggested I pay them. They were even kind enough to drive me to my hotel to get the money.

Let me guess Wink

The way to get through customs without getting serially ripped off was to make such a commotion and an uproar that your official mugger gave up on his share of the takings.

It worked too. (the Yanks can be  the loudest mouths anyway)

I imagine travel has increased so much since those days  that that practice has become  more discrete.

My adventure was a little different. Tried to frame me for something I didn't do but they had set up. Pay or go to jail. The unsuspecting tourist was in a tough spot. My advice: never drive your own vehicle there, always fly. Stay at a resort and don't leave until it's time to be driven to the airport. Undecided
