Waters fine, just cool it (make it cold and add ice) a little if you think the taste (or absence of taste) is unappealing (The difference in temperature actually effects taste, well your tastebud receptors anyway). You can always added a slice of lemon on the rocks or oranges.

I did notice the last time I was US bound, there is an increase in cordials (squashes/juices) available there.

On initial visits the only thing available was premixed concentrates or "Kool-aid" (Funnily enough the one thing I've learnt from religion is to steer clear of the stuff) It was possible to pick up an expensive bottle of Ribena (blackcurrant squash, which incidentally isn't much cheaper in the UK nowadays) but I didn't bother.

In my youth, I do remember some home-made cloudy Lemonade and Elderflower cordial, where the person that used to make it would make an extremely strong mix that could then be added to water to increase the amount got from it. Sadly though they aren't with us anymore, so I can't go asking for recipes. (Most of the ingredients I guess would of come naturally from hedgerows)

Ingredients Method
  1. Gently rinse over the elderflowers to remove any dirt or little creatures.
  2. Pour the boiling water over the sugar in a very large mixing bowl. Stir well and leave to cool.
  3. Add the citric acid, the orange and lemon slices, and then the flowers.
  4. Leave in a cool place for 24 hours, stirring occasionally.
  5. Strain through some muslin and transfer to sterilised bottles.

I make two varieties of sweetened concentrate, one from low bush cranberries and another from rhubarb (the recipe is titled "Rhubena"), both of which grow in my yard. Each one gets diluted with five parts of water or carbonated water and makes a refreshing flavored beverage, in moderation.
