What are you listening to ...right now?

Glycerine

Here is the original: https://youtu.be/bvXbHN5Gijw

A Beautiful Crash's version is here (duo): https://youtu.be/9dQCrrtY4VA

Fernando Ufret: cover of "Glycerine" (Bush)

Ufret has a knack for capturing the voice characteristics of the original singer of a song. Obviously that's not adding anything new, but when you consider the array of different challenges he has met, the mimicry is kinda notable. Even female singers like Annie Lennox. (Not to the fullest extreme, though. Wink)

My My, Hey Hey (Out of the Blue)

I'm going with that order of it, even though some instances reverse it.

Since it's 1978, in SF, and live -- I assume this is the ultimate original, before the 1979 release: https://youtu.be/vXaud8p3N0U

Here is Vedran Djurasovic's cover, which has extra tracks blended in at points, that you don't see performed: https://youtu.be/Vl_f1FOW9E0

A Choctaw name that has started returning, now that the wild escapades of Tallulah Bankhead have long dimmed in public consciousness.

One of the choice recollections along '90's alley.

The original "Breathe" is here: https://youtu.be/Vddl9TK5RqU

The original "Time" is here: https://youtu.be/Qr0-7Ds79zo

Occasionally you encounter a solo performer who sings well, but you wish their guitar playing was more than just "adequate".

Then there are those solo virtuoso guitarists who can sail through all the musical parts, but you can't help but wonder what an even more total terror they would be if they could sing the melody.

Corey Heuvel, based in Ontario, Canada -- is just that. (I.e., he could easily get by as a purely instrumental guitarist, if he couldn't carry a tune in a bucket. Example.)

Should he be deemed an ordinary vocalist by some listeners (just an "adequate" one who can ably ply most material), that's secondary to guitar buffs or players who are primarily consuming what's coming out of the guitar, anyway. The words are just icing on the cake, so that even "adequate vocals" conjoined to excellent fretwork can be amply sufficient for those connoisseurs.

Is it just me or does her song sound a lot like Whitney Houston’s?

They're both in 6/8 time.

Houston supposedly sung [some] live versions of "I Have Nothing" one whole step lower than the studio version (don't know if that's the one used in the movie). The latter starts out in the key of G-major (before modulating). So, accordingly, those live performances would begin in the key of F-major (if she did do that -- sing one whole step lower during certain concerts).

"Loved by You" is also in the key of F-major.

There's that similar category of theme in spots, too, if you meant the lyrics.

Loved by You

And baby all these nights
I've struggled and fought my pride
Scared that someone your type
Couldn't see past my flaws

I Have Nothing

You see through
Right to the heart of me
You break down my walls

Since I’m obsessed with covers these days, post one that is your absolute favorite. I feel like my playlist is stale.

Do you think there’s enough similarity for a copyright infringement?

After listening to Sam Smith’s ‘Stay with Me’, and Tom Petty’s ‘I Won’t Back Down’, it’s hard to believe that that one was an accident.

It's not a cover, and it's a wee bit old, but I just heard this the other day. I like it.

No. Songwriters and composers would never be able to write a royalty-free new song or work again, if parameters as broad as that were grounds.

Ages ago, just before a new album release, a concerned William Ackerman inquired of John Fahey: "One of the studio crew told me this tune sounded like The Last Steam Engine Train. Do you think it does?"

John Fahey (after listening): "Meh. You_can_have_it."

William Ackerman: "Not exactly the response I was expecting, but still relieved."
