Something distinctly Old School -- Prehistoric.

Apparently this kind of rather hypnotic folkloric trance music is a happening thing in Denmark and especially in Norway. They actually sing in old Germanic languages like Old Gothic, Proto-Norse and Old Norse. The lyrics are about things written about in the runes, the old gods and the supernatural powers that the ancients sensed everywhere around them, about long journeys, heroic quests and great sacrifices.

The first one has what appears to be a sacred place marked by runestones, some kind of priestess, witch or female shaman (which might not have been distinct roles at that time), somebody tuned into the supernatural making her both powerful and dangerous, conducting some kind of ritual that I don't recognize but probably means something to those who know.

From the looks of it, I think that this second very Norwegian one is about a vulnerable (symbolized by being shoeless and shirtless) young male hero type on some kind of demanding quest, climbing the sacred mountain, towards... what? The woman in black symbolizes something, probably from ancient Nordic mythology. I'd guess some sort of very ambivalent divine temptress who inspires men to do great things... and get themselves killed in the process. And ultimately something about death and transcendence. Most everything in these is symbolic somehow.

Haha. I stumbled across this a few months ago while wandering through youtube music vids (you know how it is) and it's been on one of my playlists ever since. Snap.

"Jungle" was the one that got her started, a few years ago. There are more recordings on the net, and (probably unfairly) assuming you haven't found them yet, they're worth looking for.

Been on an old school journey tonight, hit the home brew and started wandering.

Here's Etta James, back in the days when being fat, no longer young, and waddling around on stage barely able to move weren't an issue. It's hard to describe performances like these. Wishing you were there, right there, just then. Because she was.
I'm actually wondering if you could even describe this as a performance.
