be advised though--- when i advertised stryder's site on sciforums, i was banned for 3 days for advertising. I clearly showed stryder's site and clearly stated for everyone to go here.  my post was removed and i was banned for 3 days.

Freedom is empowering, Krash.

I would scale back on the categories.  Change new posts to new threads. Make the link to the today’s posts more obvious and accessible to looky-loos.  Rethink the word "portal".  It’s not very inviting.

Great discussions are the key element.   Less restrictive conversation is necessary for it to flow from one poster to another.  The topics within the topics are bound to change, and if they slip too far from the point of discussion, who really cares?  Lateral thinking can be very useful.  Who needs a little hall monitor telling you that you’re in the wrong place?

As far as advertising goes, there’s Twitter, Facebook, Google+, WordPress, etc.  I was invited through a PM on Sciforums.  Hey, I just thought of something.  Maybe that was one of Stryder's socks that invited me.  I used think it was String's.

He posted a few times in 2014. No trace since (that I remember, anyway).

I've got a bare link somewhere on my profile page or whatever it's called. Thought about indicating it was purely for those banned or perma-banned, but even that's probably ascribing too much of a purpose to its obscure presence.

I think perhaps the site needs a clearer development plan which takes into consideration the prospects of growth.

Growth could become exponential. While indeed the site see's small numbers, if the right people work together with a decent plan and the right goal then growth will be expected which is great in the long run.

That is where of course the concept of futurising Infrastructure is a necessity. In it's current state there are limitations to how many people the site can actually support, we've not pushed the bounds of those limitations just yet but they are on the horizon. That means the site "plan" in some respects need documenting, currently it's a "Wild West" rationality of "If it need a fixing, then fix it and if it don't, it don't" (I was even doing an accent with that bit).

It basically means if there is an emergency and no plan is in place,I have to be adaptable enough to handle the situation to get by. The further growth goes without a decent plan/structure the more often and longer I'll require being adaptable, I will find myself in a "Panicked" state while adapting to the constant flow of situations (server downtime because X limit has been reached, server not reachable because Y server is overloaded etc).

Somehow I'm going to put a team together to get the job done if it's going to be done correctly, however I don't have a vast network of people that can fullfill the position or the funds to hire people to do the jobs. I would literally have to look at how to turn this forum (and the many other currently pending websites) into a way to make enough revenue to fund it's own growth potential, and find people that are willing to partner up with such a venture.

(I did consider the potential of talking with other small forums owners/operators about the potential for Syndication/Co-operative structuring however I'm one guy, it's only something of interest to such people when there is literally dozens of operators already on-board and the documentation for such a plan is fully realised.)

You haven’t been around here for a while.  Well-timed, Clueluss.

Ah, well, online transparency is always somewhat troubling, isn’t it?

Now that you’re here, let me ask you something.  How do you think technology has impacted constructs such as trust?  What do you think is more important, honesty, transparency, or predictability?

Even though the human brain has, what is it, roughly a 100 billion neurons and 100 trillion synapse, do you think online behavior is slightly predictable?

I give the timin credit to Stryder (a beter mod than anuther mod i know who coud nver be as good as him... lol)*... cause i usualy drop by when he sends a notice about changes to the forum.!!!

Quote:Ah, well, online transparency is always somewhat troubling, isn’t it?

Prolly more in my early years (began in 1998... prolly soon after the time C C... Magical Realist an Yazata started... an i was postin in some same webtv forums as them)... but later on when i started my own (very successful) webtv forum it was a no-censoreship no-ban forum an everbody was welcom whenter they was socks or not.!!!

Quote:Now that you’re here, let me ask you something.  How do you think technology has impacted constructs such as trust?  What do you think is more important, honesty, transparency, or predictability?

As far as myself... i have a face book account but i only use it to read the public stuff/see the photos of family/people i know... an in forums i never give my real name or exact age... etc... for security purposes an i dont expect any more than that of others... but in real life or online i value honesty most highly.!!!

Online or offline... i thank billions of neurons/synapses is just a small part in the chain of events that makes thangs as predictable as they are... an i woud channel "String" for his educated input... but hell... hes just anuther idgit who thanks people have free will... lol.!!!

*It has to do wit a post i made at Sciforums (will post link on request).!!!

EDIT:::

O... an i dont post nanythang in PM's that wou kill me if a num-nut made it publick.!!!

Smoky was living proof that a NY or NYC area native with a science pedigree could be transplanted to Texas (decades before after military service?) and become an advocate of 'W'. Hard to believe he passed away 11 years ago.

My memory gets blurrier and blurrier as time goes by.... Did alt-discuss really exist or was it a collective fantasy? All those posts were even erased on the Webtv servers once a month or so, no long term storage as evidence. There's no information left in the world except documents / files buried in the dungeons of microsoft just dealing with its formal creation and closing down. And a few messages / threads that individuals preserved in their own archives. Anyway, it was surely real as some kind of raucous inter-subjective dream, and a hoot while it lasted. Smile

Don't be so sure that it wasn't preserved.  News group servers were/are the original "Cloud" service.  While you would post directly to one server located at your ISP or newsgroup service company, they would likely syndicate with other ISP's and newsgroup services which meant that any information appeared on their server from you posting would end up across a whole syndicated network for the usergroup of that title.

As you likely know usegroup's is now filled with people spamming advertisements etc  This occurred because people started to write bots to scrape information from the groups (In fact some of the first internet forums were literally just usenet scrapeing's)  So you had a mixture of people that would download entire posted archives to their email boxes on a day to day basis, along with those that scraped the data.

(Somebody out there somewhere can be sure to have a pretty accurate archive)

The problem with the syndication method however was how many servers a message would have to hope through to get syndicated.  It was likely that sometimes local servers wouldn't have messages appear straight away or even at all, so it was quite possible for conversions to be completely lost or even parallel conversations to occur in the same time frame within the same group without parties to each conversation knowing the other conversation even existed.  (In fact that was I assume one of the reasons for the various different spellings for some groups, when concerns that a group in particular wasn't getting updated or censored.)

[I looked into running a newsgroup some years back and found the most awkward bit about running one yourself was finding people to partner with to syndicate, as such partners needed to be "trustworth" which was automatically seen as incorporation as opposed to sole operator provisions.]

Actually that give's me an idea. What if you could find people that posted to webtv, or scraped webtv over that time period to piece together the archive of it's history? Think of it like an ancestry.com for something you did on the web. (Of course saying that there are plenty of things that I hope the archives are never found on before the dotBomb period)

These two actually have some archived posts from alt-discuss, but they're confined to some narrow areas:

I'm amazed some of these old webpages still exist. Sometimes they would have appeared quite different on a Webtv box than they do on computers. The former had special effects that only worked with its unique version of html and its "jellyscript" version of JS. But since these are on outside host sites rather than the "community" the service itself provided, they may have been conventional (Robin's at least).
