http://medicalxpress.com/news/2016-04-age.html --  " Dr Oliver Witard of the School of Sport, said: "As we grow older our muscle mass and strength naturally decline, something that is accelerated by inactivity and poor nutrition. By making simple lifestyle changes that target muscle mass and strength, older people will be able to enjoy longer and healthier lives."

A bit contrarian view might be warranted.  The joints might be more the problem than the muscles.  It's detrimental having strong muscles if they tend to dislocate weak joints.  It turns out the researchers are still correct in their conclusion that more protein is good in the diet because protein is needed to build ligaments and cartilage in joints.  That is mainly where it is needed, and muscles are of secondary importance.  It's injurious having strong quadraceps if they cause the knee joint to slide when it ought to pivot.

Not unrelated, beware of tablet (or smartphone) elbow and wrist.  The repetitive motions involved with using those devices can cause tendon trouble.

Apparently Prince was even walking around intermittently with a cane at least a few years or more before he died. The trouble caused by repeatedly dancing around in high-heeled boots on stage. He didn't opt for surgery because he had become a Jehovah Witness; the necessary operation would have required some degree of blood transfusion, which was against beliefs.
