INTRO: Many scientists and philosophers seek to provide an overall account of the world, often described as a God's eye view, that aims to picture how the universe is as a whole. In this piece, theoretical physicist Eric Cavalcanti argues that quantum mechanics throws a wrench into this idea. Using a simple thought experiment, he shows that at the heart of quantum mechanics, there is a paradox that prevents a God's eye view. The upshot is: reality is different for everyone. I smell witchcraft.
Extra cats!

"..she asks Quall-E what it saw, and finds that its report reads either “live cat” or “dead cat”, with 50% probability each. Tails, she will instruct her quantum computer to reverse the computation through which Quall-E observed the cat, thereby erasing Quall-E’s memory of it."

To 'reverse' it you have to start with another cat .. the first cat is either alive or dead .. OR it was never detected which is a can of worms you can't dismiss so easily.. if you don't detect the cat you can't just pretend to have a report based on detection.

Quote:We can still have objectivity without absoluteness. We can still do physics from within a relational world. What we may have to give up is the narrator who stands outside it.

Well put and highly thought-provoking. We all encounter a kind of objective reality that is also entirely relative to the event of our being conscious of it. We call it the future. Objective in the sense that it embraces all possibilities and probabilities much like a wavefunction or a multiverse, but relative and non-absolute in the sense of only becoming actualized in relation to a certain standpoint or subject. Omnipresence without omniscience as it were.
