INTRO: It remains a mystery about how consciousness relates to neural mechanisms. Now, with the advent of AI, some argue that consciousness could emerge in these systems. Here, philosopher and Lead for Responsible AI at Microsoft Ken Archer, and phenomenologist Harald Wiltsche, argue that the attempt to reduce consciousness to a mechanism won't work and relies on a misunderstanding. Instead, using Einstein's re-thinking of the ether as a guide, we can unlock the mystery of consciousness. (MORE - details)

I don't believe science will ever understand the true nature of being conscious and more generally the epistemic possibility of knowing in itself from inside its own physicalist framework. It would have to basically dismantle itself as an unconscious semantic word game of predication and conceptual objectification and unveil the phenomenal happening of consciousness by enacting it upon itself. How iow has science even becoming possible and successful and is its mode of truth-saying as absolute and self-evident as it has been deemed to be?

With mathematics there was certainly a new phenomenological approach of eliciting apodictic certainty from the intuitively-felt performance of equation-solving and calculation and its consequent propositional thingification as abstract laws and constants. Science/philosophy would have to do the same thing with language itself, exposing the inadequacies of mere semantic equalizations called explanations and theoretic models and find what makes possible conscious intelligibility and knowing in thinking and writing itself. Which will require a new level of knowingness Bergson alluded to as being the experience of the continuity and inherent inevitabilty of the flow of time itself found only in intuition and feeling and creativity.

Hence perhaps a new definition of understanding itself--as perhaps the self-evidencing demonstration of becoming conscious itself thru some structuralizing enactment of conception/intuition at once--analogous to what Einstein and Maxwell did.. As Heisenburg put it: "Whenever we proceed from the known into the unknown we may hope to understand, but we may have to learn at the same time a new meaning of the word 'understanding.”― Werner Karl Heisenberg, Physics and Philosophy: The Revolution in Modern Science

“Roughly speaking: to say of two things that they are identical is nonsense, and to say of one thing that it is identical with itself is to say nothing.”― Ludwig Wittgenstein, Tractatus Logico-Philosophicus

Quote:Neuroscience, we are told, is steadily revealing—or will reveal, given enough time—that intelligence and consciousness are nothing more than what the brain’s neural mechanism does.
Just run-of-the-mill scientism (science of the gaps).
