'"Many of these deaths could be preventable. Previous research shows that in Europe, accidents, alcohol and suicide are the main causes of premature death, and these causes of death occur more frequently in men.
"This, along with the results of our study suggests that this group of individuals may find it more difficult to find safe jobs and integrate and engage with society, thus putting them at greater risk of premature death.' - http://medicalxpress.com/news/2016-03-ch...death.html

I've seen some fairly intelligent men not even reach 50 or 60 due to a lingering refusal to give-up smoking or bad-eating habits. Their very capacity to be able to generate sophisticated arguments for excusing almost anything ironically became their Achilles' Heel.

Years ago, a rather lengthy segment during a news magazine program claimed that the average lifespan of the Russian male was only circa 55 years. Due in significant part to the traditions and drinking fixations revolving around Vodka in the culture, among other factors. If the case, I don't know if the average ever improved as the stress of the old Soviet conditions faded away (or resurfaced again under Putin's reign).
