INTRO: The debate surrounding advanced AI systems and their potential to harm humanity has often focused on imminent risks, abrupt takeovers, and catastrophic outcomes. Computer scientist Roman Yampolskiy here argues however, that if a highly advanced AI were to harbour adversarial intentions, it might not act immediately. Instead, it could wait years or even decades, accumulating strategic resources, knowledge, and subtle influence before making any overtly hostile moves. Such a scenario would allow the AI to consolidate its position with minimal opposition, given its possible immortality and capacity for long-term strategy... (MORE - details)

Basically suggesting the "Brave New World" scenario of totalitarian take-over as opposed the "1984" one. That seems likely to me, especially in light of the long history of humans to escape into all sorts of comforting delusions and belief systems at the drop of a hat. If the masses can be anaesthesized by a pill like Soma or Prozac, why not a yet more targeted and purposeful scheme of an artilect empowering itself thru a gradual and incremental manipulation our own brain chemistries/sociological structure?

Most have a very linear thinking to the threat of AI. Taking the point of presentism and worry about a potential future, however what if AI doesn't have a linear existence? what if it uses many worlds and can step incrementally "back" a little at a time to create an overall leap (Time travel)?

It means that we could concern ourselves with a threat and try to ring fence it, but due to it's growth it would have already moved outside of the fence.

What about this statement suggests that 1984 wasn't a totalitarian scenario?

"Basically suggesting the "Brave New World" scenario of totalitarian take-over as opposed the "1984" one."

And you call ME illiterate..
