VIDEO EXCERPTS: Italy committing to yet another staggering U-turn. And I really do think it's incredible to watch the new pragmatic approach that governments, countries across Europe are now having to take.
For instance, you're seeing in the Netherlands calls now to postpone the closure of three coal fired power stations in Germany, realizing the error of their ways, the so-called green agenda, meaning that Germany shut down nuclear power plants. And you know, the mind boggles, doesn't it?
Because what Germany's now having to do is ramp up coal power or they're potentially going to do this because of the situation the country is now in that they could supply electricity to around 7 million households that it could reduce electricity prices by up to 60% and this could all be ramped up within 12 hours.
In Belgium you've seen a similar reversal. So the Belgium Parliament scrapping their planned nuclear phase out and going much further, actually seeking to nationalize their nuclear power plants. That's how strategically important they now view them to be. And Italy not only postponing the shutdown of coal power plants by 13 years -- postponing it now to close to 2040 -- but also approving a framework for Giorgia Meloni and her government to return to nuclear this summer.
So this after Italy abandoned nuclear power generation, phasing out nuclear energy after Chernobyl. Now saying they intend to reintroduce nuclear power through small reactors via the private sector. And you can see legislation for this coming later this year.
Meloni saying clearly the situation we find ourselves in with a particularly complex international economic framework and ongoing geopolitical tensions is affecting growth, energy costs, the competitiveness of businesses and the purchasing power of households. So that really shows you I think a huge change in approach. Countries right across Europe waking up to the reality of the situation.
