EXCERPT: After more than 300 years of looking, scientists have figured out how bacteria "see" their world. And they do it in a remarkably similar way to us. A team of British and German researchers reveal in the journal eLife how bacterial cells act as the equivalent of a microscopic eyeball or the world's oldest and smallest camera eye.

"The idea that bacteria can see their world in basically the same way that we do is pretty exciting," says lead researcher Conrad Mullineaux, Professor of Microbiology from QMUL's School of Biological and Chemical Sciences from Queen Mary University of London (QMUL)....

EXCERPT: . . . Do you think it’s really possible for life to occur in rock? ... Yes, I think it is quite possible. Mantle rock contains a mineral called olivine, which turns into serpentine when it comes into contact with water at low temperatures. This produces hydrogen and methane. Both these gases provide a source of energy for microorganisms that have to manage without sunlight. Perhaps the cells we found are capable of using these gases, which are present inside the rock, to carry out their metabolic processes. But life in the rock is tough and the microbes are exposed to some very hostile conditions. The fluids that seep out of the vents at Lost City are extremely alkaline—they have a pH value of 11. Thus, both the vents and their environment are difficult to colonize, even for very resistant microorganisms....

Why are all our rock heroes dying?

EXCERPT: . . . Any claims that any of these deaths were anything to do with the sex and drugs and rock ‘n roll excesses of the 60s, 70s, 80s, 90s, 00s, 10s, would be pure speculation. It’s just pure statistics people, there is no conspiracy....

Who would have guessed bacteria can see.

That music from the early to mid rock era was the peak of pop music quality.  On the very rare occasions when I get in the mood for something, I look for the Hollies.  I used to listen so much yet still can't recall my other fav bands.  I had a fav by Shooting Star and 10cc.  I didn't get into the who much except Pinball Wizard was pretty catchy to me.  Stallng here and still can't think of the ohers.  On wait, Light My Fire (The Doors) captivated me.  Boston with their self titled album was another I liked.  I was very picky sticking to the top hits of the era like Stairway to Heaven (Led Zeppelin) that were rather melodic.
