NEWS: Tech billionaire Elon Musk has once again turned his fire on what he calls “legacy media,” accusing major news outlets of political bias after they scrutinised his own controversial hand gesture while ignoring a similar moment involving Democratic Socialist Zohran Mamdani.
“Because they aren’t actually news organisations, they are legacy media propaganda pushers for the far left,” Musk wrote in a post on X, amplifying a viral video that compares his arm movement at a January 20, 2025, event marking Donald Trump’s inauguration with Mamdani’s arm gesture.
In his latest repost, Musk argued that the same standard did not apply to Mamdani. The video he shared shows Mamdani raising his arm outward from a podium, a clip that circulated online but drew little mainstream media attention.
Zohran Mamdani was sworn in as New York mayor on Thursday at a ceremony that drew global attention, but the moment quickly slid into controversy after online claims accused him of making a Nazi-style salute. A short video clip of Mamdani’s hand gesture during the inauguration went viral, with Republican voices drawing parallels to a similar row involving Elon Musk a year earlier.
Musk’s gesture — a hand placed on his chest followed by an outward arm extension — was widely criticised at the time by outlets including The New York Times and CNN, with commentators and Democrats suggesting it resembled a Nazi or fascist salute.
Musk has long rejected the original criticism of his gesture, describing it as a political smear. The Anti-Defamation League previously said Musk’s movement appeared to be an awkward expression of enthusiasm rather than a Nazi salute.
The resurfaced comparison has reignited debate online, with supporters of Musk accusing the media of selective outrage, while others argue the two gestures are visually and contextually different.
