Strange sound haunts Cincinnati residents..

Cincinnati must be a pretty boring place in terms of industrial machinery, if residents rarely hear anything like that, or the unfamiliarity is due to such activity frequently being shut down as a nuisance. Neither a railyard nor any other potential source is going to admit that it's them, because whoever it is, they clearly have a lot of work to do and don't want to be halted via being classed as an annoying disturbance. But either the location is pretty isolated, or else nearby homes there never watch the local news. That's a clue: look for a site surrounded by desolation or an adjacent community of zombies.

One can never overestimate the range of that low frequency thrumming of distant diesel engines, especially in cold weather. I hear at least 3 a night in my apt coming from all directions. I ask my voices jokingly if they wanna ride the train. They respond forcefully "mmm mmmm"
