42% of the residents of the Portland metropolitan area aren't affiliated with any religion.

Seattle and San Francisco are tied for second most godless, at 33% unaffiliated

Denver is fourth at 32% and Phoenix is fifth at 26%

Portland serves as the Western Mecca for the ideologically and spiritually and existentially disenfranchised. It is the land of doing your own thing, which basically amounts to not living your life from some crusty old book of goatherder fables.

“Portland is quirky and different, and very attractive to people who may not feel comfortable in other social environments, particularly with a stigma against those who are atheists,” says Daniel Cox, research director at the Public Religion Research Institute.
