The cause was a fire at a power substation that's left hundreds of thousands of people in the dark, subway trains dead in their tunnels, electric buses frozen and traffic all crazy. There is video of Waymo robot cars all confused when the traffic lights went out and herds of them blocking intersections.
Officials are advising people to stay home, treat dead intersections as 4-way stops and to conserve food in dead refrigerators.
Meanwhile a big storm is headed in. A week of steady rain is expected and they are talking about the possibility of flooding. (An "atmospheric river".)
It makes me glad that I no longer live in SF where I went to college and lived for many years, and am down the peninsula towards San Jose now, where everything is fine.
The utility substation where the fire broke out. It's where the fire department ladders are up, disguised to look like a regular building but actually full of transformers.
Confused Waymos blocking a street. More recent reports say that Waymo has shut down their service in SF and are trying to clear up the clogs of bricked Waymo cars. People are pointing out that self-driving Teslas have little difficulty with street lights and traffic lights dead or flashing red during power outages, as long as the other drivers don't get too crazy. Yet the establishment media loves to write that Waymo (part of Alphabet/Google) is far ahead of Tesla FSD.
