Not really all that long ago. On December 17, 1903 at Kitty Hawk North Carolina, the first heavier than air aircraft took off under its own power. (Balloons and gliders had flown earlier.)

Other undertakings had demonstrated that getting a craft off the ground was possible, but those attempts swiftly crashed. What the Wright Brothers added was the ability to control a vehicle long enough for an actual, extended flight.
