Shadow projection (Jung)

I have long been familiar with this principle since studying Jung in my 20's--the whole notion that we project on others and on the world the things we are unconscious of in ourselves. Shadow work thus involves a lifetime of encountering the hidden face of our dark self reflected back to us from the world and of embracing this self as part of who we are. In short, befriend your demons, and have tea with your most vile imps.

Projective identification is a psychoanalytic defense mechanism where a person unconsciously projects unacceptable feelings or traits onto another person, who then unconsciously internalizes and acts out those projections. It involves three stages: the projection of a quality, the recipient's identification with that quality, and the projector influencing the recipient to embody it, creating a shared and often distorted reality. Unlike simple projection, it is a two-person dynamic that establishes a relationship based on this shared, projected material.
