EXCERPTS: So Gotwa quit "Doctor Who" for several reasons. Relations between him and the higher-ups became strained due to both professional and political disagreements.
One of the political disagreements came from the BBC who did not want Gotwa to be overly vocal on current affairs and discussions. Notice almost radio silence throughout his tenure with no interviews or real active social media presence outside the show as BBC is aware of the media storm it would cause for them if the lead actor of their most valuable property, Doctor Who, was engaging in controversial political discourse.
Now, the fans already knew that the whole reason he was there was the controversial identity politics that Russell T. Davies was trying to put out.
[...] I keep telling you it's really bad in the film industry, in the creative arts. [...] they want to go way off the rails, even further than they do. And this is them feeling like they're holding back and how they're censored.
[...] So, Gotwa was also embarrassed at the terrible viewership numbers his episodes were receiving. He began to feel his career might be in jeopardy if he didn't make a quick U-turn on his originally planned three seasons in three years.
[...] Now, there's also a total mutual agreement in place between both parties that Gotwa will legally never return to Doctor Who in any capacity, be it in audio adventures, the show itself. ... this extreme measure is being kept under wraps. There's also some resentment and disgruntlement from certain crew members towards Ncuti for exiting the role so suddenly and leaving them with uncertainty about any future work on the show.
[...] the BBC of course knows that Doctor Who is one of their most profitable brands. Just the licensing, the little products, you know, that the toys and things like that alone, make them a ton of money over at the BBC.
Now, of course, that's dropping because of the way they've mishandled things. But they know that they have to keep this going, keep that brand out there in order to keep that money train going, right?
[...] That's what Disney really wanted because they know that's a gravy train. People will rewatch the Tom Baker Doctor Who over and over and over again. People will rewatch the David Tennant Doctor Who over and over and over again...
