This afternoon a powerful car bomb detonated outside a fertility clinic in Palm Springs California.
There was at least one fatality, who I believe was the driver of the car that exploded. Witnesses describe seeing fragmentary body parts in the street. There are more injuries, I don't know how many or how serious. Windows were shattered for blocks around. The fire department and ambulances are on scene, along with police and SWAT. The FBI and ATF in LA say that they are aware and are on the case.
The driver of the car left a bizarre social media manifesto announcing that the attack was made in the name of something called "Efilism" ('Life' spelled backwards.) They believe that the evolution of sentience simply meant acquiring the the ability to suffer, and that it's an act of kindness to kill all sentient beings (especially people) since they were going to die anyway and killing them now saves them from the additional suffering of a longer life.
Frankly, the text sounds so bizarre that I'm guessing that this person (reportedly a 25 year old male) had a history of psychiatric illness.
But apparently it's a thing. Somebody put a lot of effort into editing this Wikipedia article into an extended argument for a thesis that's quite similar (except apparently without advocating the murder).
This is what happens when philosophy goes totally off the rails.
