"In 2003, eight young Rhode Island artists created a secret apartment in a hidden space inside the Providence Place Mall. They snuck furniture and building materials into their 750-square-foot hidey-hole above the retail stores, accessed via a steep ladder from the megamall’s back corridors. They tapped into the mall’s electricity, ate a lot of food court meals and, fortunately for documentarian Jeremy Workman, filmed the whole thing. The group lived in their secret mall apartment for four years. The ordeal is now the documentary Secret Mall Apartment..."

I’ve read about this and find it so curious that no one ever noticed them bringing furniture in to the space or the comings and goings. There are some interesting yet creepy documentaries that you might enjoy about “ghost malls” - malls that have been abandoned over the past ten years or so, after retailers have gone out of business.

I haven't seen it yet but maybe people assumed they were just moving stuff to the back entrances of the stores. I wonder how they went to the bathroom. I guess they just used the mall restrooms, which would be a real pain. You gotta admire their commitment!
