Visiting grandkids in BC and had the privilege of visiting here…..

Never seen anything like it. My s-i-l has a friend who lives on a street where the creek is only 20 yds from his rear property line. People living there are not allowed to build fences in the back because of potential bear encounters. Kids don’t play in back yards without a parent. There’s a trail along creek that’s about a km from a hatchery. Where we joined the trail was very close to the salmon spawning waters.
There was one more obstacle for the fish at that point, a small 2 ft high waterfall. There were many salmon either waiting for a chance to leap it, resting, or just plain didn’t have the stuff to make it. Some tried but I didn’t see any fish get past it but reports were that the ones who did were doing their thing up ahead.
Many information booths and tents at hatchery. Many people also and plenty for kids.
I couldn’t believe the size of these fish. Quite large, 3-4 ft long. All showed signs of being roughed up during the journey, including some dead individuals. They looked exhausted to me. Every now and then some made attempts to advance but unsuccessful. Didn’t see any bears.
Some great work being done by many volunteers.
