VIDEO INTRO: Several decades ago, when I first heard about multiple universes-- or the multiverse, as it's called -- it was like science fiction. More recently, with spectacular advances in cosmic measurements, most cosmologists now believe that multiple universes truly exist. But must multiple universes exist? [Are they necessary?]

Why have multiple universes gone from fanciful speculation to conventional wisdom? Why the leap in scientific confidence that multiple universes are actually out there?

To get the latest on the multiverse, I go to [...] attend the biennial gathering off the Foundational Questions Institute - -FQxi -- cosmologists and physicists who grapple with frontier theories. Some are old friends whom I haven't seen in years. Why are they now more confident in multiple universes?
