LA Flood

The National Weather Service says:

"More than 10 inches of rain has fallen across the Los Angeles area since Sunday, with plenty more to come. Significant flooding is ongoing and expected to expand/worsen as rain continues to fall. Don't put yourself in harm's way, turn around, don't drown!"

...and...

"‼️EXTREMELY DANGEROUS SITUATION UNFOLDING IN THE HOLLYWOOD HILLS AREA AND AROUND THE SANTA MONICA MOUNTAINS‼️ Life threatening landslides and additional flash flooding expected overnight tonight. Avoid travel if at all possible."

The same people were putting out apocalyptic flood and wind warnings for the San Francisco area over the weekend, warning of likely flooding and up to hurricane force winds. What we actually got was a strong winter storm, but nothing extraordinary.

So when they started issuing similarly apocalyptic warnings for Southern California as the same storm headed down there, I thought "yeah, right". But turns out that LA got hit even harder than the NWS predicted. Apparently the reason for the greater Southern California impact is twofold: First, the storm kind of stalled out and is lingering longer down south, increasing rainfall totals. And second, the 'atmospheric river' is pushing moisture laden air over the San Gabriel and San Bernardino mountains which are higher than the mountains around San Francisco which squeezes the moisture out of the air. That creates serious flash flooding in the streams leading south out of the mountains into the densely built up areas.

Right now, literally millions of people are under a flash flood warning.

You've all seen pictures of the Los Angeles river, all concreted in, usually dry, covered with graffiti and hugely ugly. For some of us, it kind of symbolizes all of LA. Well, the reason they concreted it in like that was to prevent a repeat of devastating floods in 1938. It's designed to be able to handle massive runoff. And as video in the post below shows, it's getting a workout today.
