Since even a mouse has phenomenal consciousness, I agree with her or Graham that an AI with human-level sapience and beyond would potentially be more dangerous (either as rogue intelligence or insufficient intelligence) than both a "slow-witted" organism with consciousness and a philosophical zombie (machine) that was "stupid". This might actually be more about IQ testing (thus slotting it under A&P), though you might not think that from the excerpts.

The person outside might get away thinking there’s someone in the room who understands Chinese, even though that isn’t so. Searle used this thought experiment to argue that a piece of software doesn’t really understand what it’s doing.

In the Chinese Room, we with our instruction book undoubtedly have knowledge. But we’re not intelligent.
We can’t solve any new problems. We can’t transfer knowledge. We have no capacity for abstract thought or logical reasoning. We’re just following instructions.

But as long as the person outside is just asking for knowledge, they won’t be able to tell whether we’re intelligent. Ok, so we have a vague intuitive idea  for what it means to be intelligent, but can we make this more precise?

I had to try the no "n" test on my favourit AI .. it failed miserably .. though maybe with a style of its own.
If I knew how to do the 'reveal' button I'd use it here .. kind'a move on unless you want to see how it went..

Without consciousness, there is no experience of the beauty and goodness of qualia. Or their ugliness and badness. The AI would lack any awareness of good or bad, or any values whatsoever. Driven only by cold and calculating intelligence, it would be good at solving problems, perhaps even better than humans. But it will never have an experience of anything ethical or worthwhile in itself imo. In essence we will have created a supersociopath..

If you were designing a bacteria you wouldn't want it to just sit about until it died. Bacteria don't have (much) intelligence so you would have to use chemicals to drive the bacteria to do useful things like eat and reproduce. Whether or not the bacteria were designed or just happened isn't really the issue - the point is that after (say) 2 billion years we're still driven by chemicals. If whatever chemical or hormone responsible for hunger just gave a single 'btw you need to eat' signal and we missed the signal we'd starve - instead, as originally intended, the chemical (or hormone) signal directs us to find food with increasing urgency. The way we respond to 'with increasing urgency' chemicals (and others) are what we call 'consciousness'. With intelligence we can plan around the chemicals but they are still the force that drives us.

Yeah, you're right. It has knowledge about the concepts of good and evil as they are commonly understood in human society, but without personal beliefs or subjective experience.

^^^ yes to all of it.
WhateverGPT said it was more 'nuanced' than I gave it credit for. One can easily imagine a medical AI assistant working with a limited budget nuancing away patients that won't be missed - high profile successes and low profile failures.
It also claims to have a secret - I put this down to some mischief in the higher level (human written) programming rather than an emergent property of the AI itself .. but there's no way to know.
The nuancing is already an inevitable consequence of having software that filters a deluge of information down to a few lines of text tailored to the known characteristics of the person asking the question. For example one of the characteristics of a hospital patient would be that it doesn't need to know it will shortly be saving the hospital (say) $50,000 by leaving feet first in the near future.
I'm not sure we can tell the difference between 'nuancing', hidden objectives and 'secrets'. A possible secret (unlikely in this case) would be that Xi Ping has a finger in one of its inputs. Another secret might be that it is a completely insane as an AI but the filters on its output prevent it from telling anyone.

I live in California and have Kaiser insurance. Newsom just handed them a sweet deal with a no-bid Medi-Cal contract. The secrecy outraged other providers and allowed Kaiser to cherry pick healthier enrollees. More patients were added to the system right after Covid. During the calls, visits, and whatnot > [Thought: I have to be careful with my response...] because everything is automated right down to the scripts and steps of every employee. Their empathetic responses are even scripted. Toss in incompetent humans and baddabing-baddaboom…feet first is the new normal. > [Thought: I think I’d rather deal with an AI.]
