KEY POINTS: In the war on cancer, we're detecting and aggressively treating more malignant tumors than ever before. But at the same time, we're also over-treating more cancers then ever. Cancer exists on a spectrum. Some have less than a 5% chance of progressing over two decades while others have more than a 75% chance of progressing over one to two years. For low-risk cancers, patients and their doctors should consider "active surveillance" of their tumor rather than opting for immediate treatment in the form of surgery or chemotherapy... Just today I had my first bone scan. Why? Did I need it?

Had radiation therapy for prostate cancer just over 5 years ago. For three years after that my PSA count dropped to a low of .46 and for the next two years it started to rise again. In November last year it was up to 1.99. To my oncologist, 2.5 is reason for concern. This March my PSA went down to 1.8. Last week she booked me in for two scans, a bone scan (today)and a CAT which I have this Friday. Apparently these two tests are required in order for me to have a special test in the fall but I have no idea what that’s testing.

Only thing I figure is she has my best interests at heart and is making sure I’m cancer free. It’s nerve wracking for sure. Bone scan takes about hour and follows an injection of some radioactive fluid I had earlier this morning. Long day. She told me 5 years ago that PSA will bounce following treatment but they’re unsure exactly why. Maybe they know something now, idk.

I had Covid twice during last two years and if you trust internet there are many articles indicating PSA rises with the disease. But she says no. I also asked her if my age means my PSA goes up and again, no. So I guess I’ll see what happens…fingers crossed.
