Red meat is not a health risk. New study slams years of shoddy research

KEY POINTS: Studies have been linking red meat consumption to health problems like heart disease, stroke, and cancer for years, but these invariably suffer from methodological limitations.

In an unprecedented effort, health scientists at the University of Washington scrutinized decades of research on red meat consumption and its links to various health outcomes, introducing a new way to assess health risks in the process.

They only found weak evidence that unprocessed red meat consumption is linked to colorectal cancer, breast cancer, type 2 diabetes, and ischemic heart disease, and no link at all between eating red meat and stroke.

EXCERPT: [...] “The evidence for a direct vascular or heath risk from eating meat regularly is very low, to the point that there is probably no risk,” commented Dr. Steven Novella, a Yale neurologist and president of the New England Skeptical Society. “There is, however, more evidence for a health risk from eating too few vegetables. That is really the risk of a high-meat diet, those meat calories are displacing vegetable calories.”

The IHME team plans to utilize their burden of proof function on all sorts of health risks, creating a massive, freely accessible database... (MORE - missing details)

EXCERPTS: . . . Moderation is the key to maintaining a healthy relationship with marijuana. Consider these 3 false but widely-held myths you need to stop believing to have a healthy relationship with marijuana.

1. "Marijuana is not harmful to your mental health."

The science is conclusive: The THC concentration in marijuana is on the rise. A recent study published in The Lancet found that this increase in potency brings a slew of serious mental health risks for marijuana users...

[...] 2. "Marijuana cures anxiety."

Marijuana is touted by some as an almost magical herb that relieves you of anxiety and improves your quality of life. Science, however, finds that reality to be much more nuanced. A study published in the Journal of Translational Medicine found that while CBD may be helpful in managing symptoms of anxiety, THC is not. In fact, THC has anxiety-inducing properties...

[...] 3. "Marijuana makes you creative."

Pop culture is full of anecdotal evidence that marijuana makes you a better writer, musician, or artist. Let’s explore this claim through a scientific lens. A recent study published in the Journal of Applied Psychology discovered that while users may think they are more creative while under the influence, the drug had no bearing on the actual creativity displayed... Although marijuana is legal in my state, I don't partake in it. When I tried an edible a few years ago it basically felt like I had about three glasses of wine. I don't need that sedative effect. Also marijuana is known for inducing feelings of paranoia over time. I don't require any help in that department! When I took diet pills (basically amphetamines) many years ago I thought my neighbors were watching me thru cameras in the light sockets! lol

These people are in no position to make the third claim. They would actually have to study brain chemistry and the mind to claim any authority on this issue.

Marijuana makes you think you're more creative, but objectively, you are not. What you are mistaking for creativity is actually aimlessness thinking and free association that doesn't actually create anything.
