Collision at Dallas Airshow

This seems to have happened in just the last few minutes.

A WWII relic B 17 bomber was doing a fly-past while a smaller plane (a WWII fighter?) buzzed it, and they collided! Looks like nobody in either plane survived. Obviously multiple fatalities and irreplacable vintage planes lost. Unknown what the planes hit on the ground.

??? The whole body of the bomber tidily separated from the wings, with the latter continuing for an instant as if still in flight. Tragedy, awful loss for the applicable families.

B-17s are an aircraft that at one time the aircraft and crew would be counted out and counted back with the expectation that not all would return. Very sad to lose the crew and aircraft in this way.

It looks to me like the fighter plane intended to make a left turn and pace the bomber off its left wing. But it didn't turn sharp enough and struck the bomber on the left side right behind the left wing. Whether it was pilot-error or a mechanical problem remains to be determined. The bomber appears to have broken in two with its rear fuselage and tail separated from the wings and nose. Some photos suggest the bomber was pretty well torn up as far forward as the cockpit and the pilots probably were killed in the impact. But if there was anyone in the nose bombadier's position, he probably rode it down.

Yes. What makes it especially sad is that this kind of aircraft restoration work is typically done by volunteers as a labor of love. These were people who loved these old planes and their histories.
