Lol, MR! ^

CC - thanks for sharing about Windscribe. I just downloaded it, for $9 a month plan.

I’ll probably cancel it after the month but your post intrigued me, and I think it’s pretty cool! So, I’m not seeing the screen from before on SF, I’m seeing one now that gives a few reasons why the site could be down.

I can still access the forum, just as it always is. It's kind of bizarre, like wandering around the streets of a deserted town.

I see these ghosts registering as online occasionally -- like exchemist and Dave and el es. But they don't do anything (apart from the last one having submitted a post yesterday morning).

I started a Sciforums Outage thread. It's still at the top of New Posts after all these hours. And currently it shows 25 visits. From who? It must be the bots (the guests), the zombies. Who can somehow still reach SF in the hundreds, when most of the humans can't.

I'd love to watch the anal probing! "Stop! You don't exist! Oww!"

If there is a DDoS to the Namesaver (when the nameserver is attacked by multiple accesses) it's still possible to access a domain for the most part if you have the IP and their name in your DNS cache (or DNS server). Failing that you can add it manually into a HOSTS file to override having the problem of domain resolution. (In other words you can directly access the server without using the nameserver and it gets around the DDoS.)

Using a VPN or a Proxy can sometimes allow you to continue accessing to as they will likely have their own DNS server cache although I couldn't tell you how regularly they'd set their records to update. (It could be on the hour or once every 24 hours) However I will point out that using a VPN or a Proxy is placing a thirdparty acting as a security aggregator which in turn means there is the potential that if they are rogue service or if they are the subject of an attack you'll be likely more exposed than if you didn't use one.

Looks like SF is down again, at least for some regions. Hopefully just one of the brief spasms that will be an hour or so.
