Chileans overwhelmingly voted against a proposed new constitution on Sunday, rejecting what would have been one of the world's most progressive charters.

While nearly 80% of Chileans voted to draft a new constitution in 2020, nearly 62% of voters rejected the new text with 99.74 percent of ballot boxes counted.
...
The proposed text that voters rejected was a response to widespread violent protests that gripped the nation in late 2019 and focused on social rights, the environment, gender parity and indigenous rights, a sharp shift from its market-friendly constitution dating back to the Augusto Pinochet dictatorship.

The new proposed constitution would have been a huge government takeover, by a coalition including the Communist Party of Chile. It would have had the government take over large portions of healthcare, housing, and higher education, dissolve their Senate (removing some representation), ban guns for self-defense, allow leftist abortion policies, and push extreme leftist environmental policies...hurting the economy.

Congratulations Chile!

An instance of a majority public having more cautious cynicism about them than some academic institutions?

Many scientists seem shockingly gullible at times -- dispensing with critical-thinking and cautious skepticism when it comes to any secular, do-gooder facade that lacks supernatural elements: "Howdy. You folks are socially conscious altruists adept at a particular brand of socioeconomic analysis? Well, gosh-dang, feel free to come on in here and run the place!"
