Pro-choice activists confront anti-choice bigots’ march in London
https://socialistworker.co.uk/news/abort...in-london/

INTRO: Abortion campaigners stood up to anti-choice bigots in Parliament Square, central London, on Saturday to defend the right to choose. Some 600 protesters joined the rally called by Abortion Rights UK to counter-protest the annual March For Life.

Protester Angie told Socialist Worker, “Bigots have ripped rights away for people in the US. Now they’ve come here to try to do the same. Where do they get all their money from? It’s scary that anyone would fund such disgusting views.”

Pro-choicers stood firm under the statue of feminist Millicent Fawcett while the bigots occupied Parliament Square. While their speeches went on, pro-choicers booed and cheered to drown them out... (MORE - details)

Tory MPs plot to bring back Boris Johnson with vote this winter to sack Liz Truss
https://www.mirror.co.uk/news/politics/t...k-27901163

INTRO: Disgraced Boris Johnson could return to No10 in an astonishing plot hatched by warring Tory MPs. Twelve plan to submit no-confidence letters in Liz Truss – set to become new PM on Monday – and want a leadership vote by Christmas.

One Tory said: “Liz is not very bright.” Another added: “Our only chance is with Boris.”

The rebels claim the current Foreign Secretary she is the WORST person to take on the top job. As removals men today continued to load up the PM’s possessions, one top Conservative said: “MPs are ready to put letters of no confidence in as early as this week. Liz Truss is not very bright, has poor judgment, little empathy with people and sees everything in money terms. In the worst of times she’s the worst possible choice for PM.”

But the rebellion was branded insane by other Tories. One said: “This is madness. The country won’t wear 160,000 Conservative members choosing another PM, especially a retread. We’ll end up with a general election.” (MORE - details)

'Our first impression of Boris Johnson was right - we hope we are wrong about Liz Truss'
https://www.mirror.co.uk/news/politics/o...n-27902339

INTRO: Memories must be short for MPs to want Boris Johnson back before Liz Truss has even got her feet under the Prime Minister’s table. Either that or they know she will be so awful even a lying, bumbling lump of dishonesty would be preferable to having her in charge.

Had it been left to Tory MPs, Rishi Sunak would be PM on Monday. Had it been left to us, the voters, the whole Tory shower would be out. Instead, we are almost certain to have Ms Truss foisted on us by 160,000 pale, male and stale Conservative members – 96% white, 66% men, 70% over 50 – representing less than 0.4% of the electorate.

Liz Truss had plenty to say about crowd-pleasing tax cuts to which her Tory audiences are instinctively wedded.

Scrapping the National Insurance rise will save the 10% wealthiest £93 a month, but the poorest just 76p. That will raise inflation but do nothing about the price of winter fuel.

She had nothing to say to the owner of a tiny restaurant who took to Twitter in despair today as his annual electricity bill soars from £2,928 to £22,516 – more than his rent.

Nothing to say to 6.7 million people who cannot get routine surgery or to heart attack patients waiting an hour for ambulances... (MORE - details)

'Teachers are going above and beyond feeding kids - Government needs to act now'
https://www.mirror.co.uk/news/uk-news/te...g-27902334

INTRO: Teachers are giving desperate youngsters clothes and buying them food with money from their own pockets, but like those other heroes of our country – NHS workers and emergency services – it's what they do. In the last couple of years, the pandemic threw into sharp relief what our teachers actually do.

Not just teaching how to read and write, marking homework, and filling in end-of-term reports. It was so much more.

Through the whole thing, teachers never stopped. Even though school buildings closed, they made sure learning went on.

We learned that children’s mental health issues soared outside school. Neglect cases were missed.

They don’t do the job for the money, or the hours, or the praise. They do it because they care about those young people in their charge. Our children.

Today we learn the extent of that care.

Teachers are giving desperate youngsters clothes and buying them food with money from their own pockets. It’s above and beyond. But like those other heroes of our country – NHS workers and emergency services – it’s what they do.

Denmark has lessons for Scotland
https://newsnet.scot/news-analysis/denma...-scotland/

EXCERPTS: Denmark a country with only a slightly larger population than Scotland and is a world leader in renewable energy providing Danish companies with income from global markets.

[...] Ørsted is a major multinational energy company and the world’s largest developer of offshore wind power. That is the reason FM Nicola Sturgeon met with Ørsted on her trip to Denmark last week. Scotland can both cooperate and learn from Ørsted on our journey to independence.

Unlike in the UK where anything not nailed down is sold off to the private sector, Denmark has a much better model. Ørsted is 50.1% owned by the Danish government. Ørsted pays yearly dividends which have increased by 39% over the last 5 years...

[,,,] Scotland has a major position in life sciences, a growing satellite industry – Scotland produces more small satellites than any other country in Europe. The Scottish Government plans to create 20,000 jobs through new space strategy by 2030. Scotland also has a major position in the global games industry. There are 147 active games development companies in Scotland, supporting 2,269 permanent full-time equivalent and well paid creative jobs. One of the best known is Edinburgh based Rockstar North, creator of Grand Theft Auto.

Scotland’s future is back in the EU. We will still be physically connected to England but the key economic connections will be with our European neighbours rather than a UK with an ever declining economy predicted to have the slowest growth of any G7 country according to the IMF...
