The inference is there has been some 'discretionary' chopping and changing happening behind the scenes. How many other threads may have suffered similar fates who knows.
Theirs only so many ways the site backs up, they either use the software to make the backup or they rely upon a snapshot by their server host.
When I was a Super Moderator on there I was actually attempting to send some of the older posts to the archived subforums. My rationality was that it would reduce database errors. It certain reduced thread losses, as long as it was done before an issue arose.
That however didn't stop the major loss of the Star Wars vs Star Trek thread that had about 10 years worth of posts back in 2012. That was a mystery in how it came to pass.
I couldn't suggest if anything untowards occurred in the backend on the backup being used, it's possible that it just happened to be the nearest to when the site went down, so lost some time/posts.
