Sciforums members: Salutes, criticism, burial rites, hope for resurrection, etc

The lone tweet ever issued at Twitter might be bizarrely pertinent now. (Perhaps intended to be eternally applicable or universal in function.)

https://twitter.com/sciforums

11:20 PM · Sep 18, 2014: "Sciforums.com is currently having a few problems with a cyber attack.  Service shall resume.... eventually."

Lol... That's the lone tweet of the account I setup on Twitter for Plazma to use. I parted Sciforums while giving him the password/user info for such accounts. Apparently they never used them (And I've still got access to the account :/ ) Shame I didn't have some news to post on it for them lol

Incidentally I'd just been checking Reddit to see if anyone had said anything... nothing there.

btw the lone tweet was in response to a large bot attack that occurred back then, which literally brought the site down to it's knees, at which point they updated the software. (probably the last time it was updated :/)

Hopefully, the site is temporarily down due to maintenance, but maintenance usually doesn't last this long. I belong to another site and they usually post a banner when they're going through maintenance. They do have quite a few bots over there spamming the forums with a variety of links, on a near daily basis. I was in the middle of an interesting discussion related to the Pentagon and its examination of ghosts. LOL C C was part of that thread...oh well, that would be a shame because we were getting somewhere, I think? Big Grin

And I'd definitely miss MR's space alien thread...

Some years back there was a massive server crash at SF. Resulting in various threads being variously partially or completely wiped from their evidently zero backup system. Yours truly was the ONLY one who stepped in and managed to resurrect a number of such threads (because I saved to disk after each posting - just in case) - getting almost no thanks for doing so.
Later - and I wasn't the first to raise it - urged JR/mods in general, to FINALLY take action and change from the old and insecure http protocol to https.
Nothing done. Couldn't be bothered. I for one will pour champagne and raise a toast in the unlikely event SF goes down permanently. So much hypocrisy from the top down there.

SF is back, unless it has been replaced by one of those "pod-people" copies that is so successful that it has even hijacked the original's address.

Yes SF is actually back. And the first thing I noticed was a favorite thread to watch has 'lost' a page since coming back online. Was up to p307. Back down to p306.
No notice of any official culling.
The inference is there has been some 'discretionary' chopping and changing happening behind the scenes. How many other threads may have suffered similar fates who knows.

Theirs only so many ways the site backs up, they either use the software to make the backup or they rely upon a snapshot by their server host.
When I was a Super Moderator on there I was actually attempting to send some of the older posts to the archived subforums. My rationality was that it would reduce database errors. It certain reduced thread losses, as long as it was done before an issue arose.

That however didn't stop the major loss of the Star Wars vs Star Trek thread that had about 10 years worth of posts back in 2012. That was a mystery in how it came to pass.

I couldn't suggest if anything untowards occurred in the backend on the backup being used, it's possible that it just happened to be the nearest to when the site went down, so lost some time/posts.

If you read the thread started by Beerw/straw in the Site Government section, Tiassa explains what happened. It sounds like a license expiration. Happy to see that the site wasn’t hacked. I’m wondering if a site is hacked, if there’s any hope of getting it back up again.

I like these little corners of the internet. It’s not as busy as social media and the topics are refreshing.
