EXCERPT: [...] Piḷḷai Lokācārya (13th c.) stresses that loving without reason is superior to loving with a reason [...] one who loves with reasons is like a mercenary who is ready to serve a new warlord. [...] Yet… this means that there is no intrinsic reason to say that loving God is better than loving a demonic being [...] there is no reason whence loving God should in itself be a reason for distinguishing better people. Love for love's sake. The total altruistic sacrifice of individual egocentric needs for the beloved. Is such even advisable? Does the beloved even WANT a door mat to be used for their every egocentric need? No..The beloved wants to give back, to return the love that is being unquestionably showered upon them. Hence the inherent conflict within all unconditional loving--the gradual self-erasure of the lover for the sake of the beloved, who is only left with nothing to love and sacrifice for. The total enabling of the beloved's narcisstic impulses and needs for praise. Love must be other than this. It must be wise and open to the needs of the beloved to love back. It must stoop to become loveable and flawed for the sake of the beloved. It cannot subsist as an impersonal pleroma of goodwill and giving. It must be human, it must be accessible, and it must be finitely objectified for the sake of the beloved.
