Scientists just discovered something horrifying about artificial sweeteners

INTRO: According to a new study, some of the most commonly used artificial sweeteners could potentially cause serious health issues by making the bacteria in our gut invade our intestinal walls.

The study underlines that there’s still a lot we don’t understand about the sweeteners being added to many diet products — and demonstrates that further research is needed.

“There is a lot of concern about the consumption of artificial sweeteners, with some studies showing that sweeteners can affect the layer of bacteria which support the gut, known as the gut microbiota,” said Havovi Chichger, senior lecturer in Biomedical Science at Anglia Ruskin University in the UK, lead author of a paper about the research published in the International Journal of Molecular Sciences, in a press blurb.

INTRO: As the monsoon creeps toward the Valley, Sonoran Desert Toads are starting to come out of their hiding places in the ground.

This hefty toad native to the Sonoran Desert is highly sought after for its hallucinogenic venom, which is a highly dangerous drug that is also growing in popularity these days — especially after the premiere of a 2017 Vice News documentary about it.

Hunter Biden, the president’s son, claims to have kicked crack cocaine after smoking the venom, and boxer Mike Tyson says it changed his life.

But conservationists warn that not only is the drug dangerous and illegal, but harvesting it harms the toads.

Robert Villa is a naturalist in Tucson and president of the Tucson Herpetological Society. He has been raising awareness about the toads and asking people to not use the venom.
