Brighter and more vibrant colors might attract more people?

I personally find the dark colors don't really appeal to my taste. Perhaps brighter colors might be more welcoming.

No, brighter colors are harder on the eyes.

You sound bored Ostro.

My two favorites, ultraviolet and infrared, but can't see it happening.

i have a theory.

the human brain requires new data to survive in the upper intellectual processes of the frontal lobes.
brains with more connections between more parts and more highly developed require more new data to maintain their functional processess.
women having more connections between hemispheres default at requiring more new visual stimulation to maintain a default level of ideal functionality.
historical programming(genetic) by gender to illicit emotional attachments or pre-coding associations with colours is a dominating feature of basic brain chemistry.

as you were

Forums are an obscure and in some respects dying method of communication (much like Usernet/Newgroups and IRC). A mixture of trolling, spambots and software that it's streamlined to be reactive with modern peripherals tends to be the main reason that people no longer frequent them as much, as well as the advent of many social networking platforms.

This means that forums for the most part are for a niche crowd of people that feel more comfortable being able to communicate rather than limiting their messages to a couple of emoji's or a 140 character limit (although even that's changed since SMS is also on the way out).

That being said, colour changes are important to some extent. Ideally the site should have a facelift every so often to keep it refreshed. The current problem is that the current theme skin is literally a hack of the vanilla skin (Through various modifications), so picking up a skin from elsewhere as a quick replacement will lose some (if not most) of the functionality, the alternative is building a new skin from scratch which will take time to do.

While that means that you likely wouldn't see changes for months, there is still another option open to you if you use certain browser settings to change their default colour's to override a sites colours. This will not necessarily generate colour coordination however as some elements will likely remain and others might not even be visible due to various effects.

(While this sites software was HTML3 compliant, it's actually rendered under HTML5 rulesets. HTML has had many changes over the years, part of that was moving various attributes of elements to be controlled by CSS as opposed to written into the core HTML, the intention being that the CSS can then be altered to fit various platforms and allow customisation for both developers and the end user. So it's possible to put together your own theme to some extent.)

Further potentials involve addon's or extensions that allow you to use your own CSS files in place of the ones the site provides. Removing the CSS from the body will give you a mostly straight forwards output with not themeing or colouration, the CSS does most of the work.

I've not tested this firefox addon however it apparently allows people in their community to skin sites they use and use the add-on to adjust the sites to fit those custom skins:
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/stylish/
https://userstyles.org/

So if you wanted to create one for this site, you can share it with everyone here and others. If it's a good one I'll even consider adding it to the site as an official theme (With all artistic rights fully respected)
