My guess is that Trump saw at least a million followers in front of him. At his request they would take over the seat of government and the adoring crowd would declare him to be President for Life (like Putin in Russia). A while back I thought it was too late for him to try anything really stupid - just how wrong can you be.

The whole past year going into this one seems like either a surreal Monty Python skit or a poorly written venture into comedic absurdity. It's almost dreamlike, like some slumbering East Asian deity is about to wake up and all the normal regularities and stable logic of the world have been slowly crumbling as the world incrementally fades away. I don't expect this psilocybin trip to end with the exorcism of Trump. Something... something... events even more unsettling than a singing, chartreuse giraffe floating by the window are lurking ahead...

I 'laughed out loud' for real. You should be a blogger, CC.

They hated him. Oh yes, they (and not just the media) HATED him with a sort of irrational psychopathic passion that I've never seen before in my entire life.

The kind of hate-filled divisiveness and intolerance of disagreement that we currently see in American social life frankly scares me.

The real question is why?

What is happening to us?? (It isn't just the US, we see similar things in Europe too.) I fear for the future of American democracy, our fundamental liberties and for the future of Western Civilization itself.

Is it at all possible, that some of the hatred from the media and the left...came from Trump's successes? And that jealousy sparked some of the backlash from the media. No matter how much one may dislike the man, some of his policies have been good for the US.

I'm still waiting to hear what Biden's policies are.  Huh

What I fear the most going into a Biden/Harris administration, is how the media will treat it. I believe we won't know the truth of what is actually happening, it will be hidden by the media. Something I liked about Trump, even though at times it bordered on obnoxious frat-boy behavior, was that he wasn't afraid to use social media to speak for himself. And he ripped the mask off of the media. He spoke his own words before the media could twist them. In a weird way, I'm going to miss that.

Of the 10s to 100s of thousands (over a half million by some estimates) of people at that rally/protest, only a few thousand breached the Capitol. So not a large percent of those in attendance, much less representative of Trump's supporters or Republicans in general. Trump never suggested anything of the sort and was immediately tweeting for non-violence, cooperation with police, and to leave the Capitol.

But leftist idiots will believe anything they're told...by their leftist sources.
Democracy is a zig-zag path. Anything good that comes out of it is a triumph of democracy - for everything else we just have to hang in until the next election.

I doubt there will ever be a better summary. Trebuchet and Tahoma font .. ? - makes perfect sense now.
I don’t know about Mexico but I think Canada might consider building a wall. Might not need a Mexican border wall now because don’t need one to accomplish the objective of the original plan. Or maybe Mexico builds one to keep neighbour out.

Trump goes ballistic after being banned from Twitter

"President Donald Trump has many prized possessions. But few seemed to inspire as much personal joy as his Twitter feed. Trump routinely boasted of the social media bullhorn he possessed. He credited it with launching his political trajectory. And he used it as a tool to lacerate his foes.

On Friday night, he lost it. And, then, he lost his mind.

The president is “ballistic,” a senior administration official said after Twitter permanently took down his account, citing the possibility that it would be used in the final 12 days of Trump’s presidency to incite violence. The official said Trump was “scrambling to figure out what his options are.”

So too was much of the political universe, which has become bleary-eyed obsessive about Twitter these past four years as Trump used the medium to fire advisers, sink legislative initiatives, encourage social duress and, lastly, praise the scores of MAGA faithful, just days after hundreds of them violently ransacked the Capitol.

In a statement issued by the White House, Trump said he’d been “negotiating with various other sites” while “we also look at the possibilities of building out our own platform in the near future.” But aides did not reveal what plans were in the works. When Trump’s eldest son, Don Jr. offered up a URL to those hoping to keep tabs of his father’s whereabouts, it was a site that had been purchased in 2009 and, in recent years, a place where his books were sold. For those who did sign up, an email was sent, plugging his latest work: “Liberal Privilege”.

“As you know, the election is coming up,” it read, of the contest that took place two months ago.

For Trump, the Twitter ban was yet another inglorious passage to the final chapter of his presidency. Over the past two days, he’s been admonished by his own aides, chastised by Republicans, and threatened once more with impeachment.

Through it all, he’s been uncharacteristically quiet — banished temporarily at first from the main social media platforms but also unwilling to go out and speak before the press. The only times the public saw him were through awkwardly-edited White House produced-videos. In one, he urged for the rioting to end while clinging to the fiction that the election had been stolen from him. In another, he conceded he would not serve a second consecutive term.

There are no plans to immediately emerge from the cocoon either. One White House official said there were initial internal discussions between White House aides and Trump of doing a “last farewell interview.” But, the official added, “I’m not sure if they’re going to come to fruition,” much to the official’s chagrin.

“I don’t want the lasting impression of this administration to be what happened at the Capitol,” the official said. “We have a lot of accomplishments of this administration that should be highlighted so that we can leave a good final impression.”

Trump entered office boasting of how he was the “Hemingway of 140 characters” and crediting Twitter in particular for powering his political ascent. More than 56,000 tweets later, he leaves it amid a futile game of Whac-A-Mole with the tech moguls he despises, exiled to the outer provinces of the internet.

If this is how Trump’s presidency closes out, it will be a remarkable endnote. As a candidate for office, he was — at times — ubiquitous: posting outrageous takes on Twitter, calling into cable news shows, and grabbing the camera’s attention even when the podium on which he was set to hold a campaign rally was empty. Now, he’s increasingly isolated and receding from the spotlight. His favorite bullhorn is gone; oh, and the presidency is too.
An unnamed "senior administration official" means it's either made up or the person knows others will refute their claims.
My concern with permanently banning Trump, is there are TONS of highly offensive tweets out there posted by those on the left and right, but their accounts remain in tact. I remember reading terrible, threatening type comments posted by liberal celebs about Trump a year back and their accounts were never banned. I’m concerned if we cherry pick who gets to be heard on social media, we will lose our democracy.

Granted, Twitter and others may feel that Trump’s tweets serve no useful purpose now except to aggrandize himself and toss fuel on the flames coming from his angry supporters. I haven’t read Trump’s recent tweets before his banning - were they encouraging further mayhem or is this an overreaction from Twitter?

My impression of Twitter is that it overlooks insults and trolling but objects to the inciting of riots or crimes. That's the rule that Trump broke. I didn't get a chance to read Trump's tweet either so I don't know what he said exactly. His speech on Wednesday seemed to encourage them to storm the Capitol. As usual Trump's rhetoric is slippery and ambiguous and can be interpreted in different ways. Trumpers are generally very literal minded folk and might take "take your country back" as a literal taking over of the Capitol bldg.

No, they actually banned him so you couldn't read that his tweets were asking for civility, non-violence, cooperating with police, and once the Capitol was breached, leaving the Capitol. The media couldn't lie as easily if everyone could just go read Trump's tweets for themselves.

Here's an archive of the tweets you can no longer read on Twitter:

These are the things and events that happen when a sacred landslide election victory is so unceremoniously & viciously stripped away from great patriots who have been badly & unfairly treated for so long. Go home with love & in peace. Remember this day forever!

I am asking for everyone at the U.S. Capitol to remain peaceful. No violence! Remember, WE are the Party of Law & Order – respect the Law and our great men and women in Blue. Thank you!

I see, but perhaps Trump’s insistence that he won the election and that it was fraudulently “taken” from him, is perceived as “fightin’ words” by the MSM. Of course the media loathes Trump as does most on the left, so they could be reaching.

We tend to see news reports from other countries showing chaos and riots in the streets when their citizens are fed up with their respective regimes. We’re not used to seeing citizens (physically) banding together and “rising up” against our own government. It’s sobering and a bit scary as to what the future may look like with a Biden/Harris administration.

Are you at all worried for the future of our democracy?
