INTRO: Many physicists and computer scientists, from John Wheeler to Google Deepmind's Demis Hassabis, have argued that reality is fundamentally made of information. Wheeler called this "it from bit". But this is mistaken, argues Boston University physicist and philosopher of science, Gregg Jaeger. Information supposes a relation between the information itself and its physical encoding. Reality cannot be made of information, because without already existing physical objects to encode it, information does not exist... (MORE - details)
I wouldn't say the universe is MADE of information as that suggests already physical composition. Information doesn't seem to me anything that can compose anything, at least not in the usual materialistic sense. Does the story compose the book? Does language compose thought? Do mathematical equations compose reality? Rather, information instantiates physical reality. It collapses non-physical states and superpositions into factual instances of happenstance. But does it not require a physical medium to be transmitted? Not in the conventional physicalist sense of a code embedded in matter. No more than the virtual reality of a video game requires the video artifacts to embody the program making up the game. Physical reality expresses or manifests information that already exists timelessly before hand. The instant the information manifests the reality manifests as itself, as if always being there. Bit before it as Wheeler says. An implicate order as Bohm puts it.
The only way the universe being made of information would be at all tenable is if it's illusory, perhaps only existing withing a single "mind." That's the only way I see that you avoid a physical substrate for the information. But that requires accepting the non-physical side of dualism as a monism. And it would likely place the fundamental reality of the universe beyond anything science could hope to comprehend.
The physical substrate is nothing more than an illusion. As I have demonstrated in another thread, everything the human eye perceives can only be information. It would therefore force us to conclude that reality is binary or 0's and 1's. Both of which correspond to real and unreal.
Another illiterate... this one not knowing what "demonstrated" means.
The subject has been kept current, I already delved into what I considered on the subject in another thread:

The problem is that paper writing or creating something at a level that can be read by others (especially with the absence of illustrations) tends to mean that it's just a person blurt that in all likelihood no one finds any merit in. That being said if looked at, it has point that can be discussed further. (or of course ignored)
