Moving Lake Chippewa's Annoying Islands

Here's a bunch of boaters in Lake Chippewa in northern Wisconsin who decided that one of the lake's islands was too close to the bridge crossing the lake, so they all went out in their boats and successfully pushed the island to a different place in the lake!

On Lake Chippewa, all the locals keep an eye out every morning to spot where the islands are that day. They move unpredictably!

I don't know whether it's more amazing that trees can grow in the floating bogs, or that the material is firm and deep enough for the roots to keep the trunks upright.

We get smaller clumps of cattail islands that can sometimes move back and forth across the bay until hitting and sticking somewhere. Occasionally one needs to be towed away from boat channels. Worst are the mud islands that come up from the bottom and become a real navigation hazard when you can’t see them, especially in choppy waters. Fortunately they attract roosting seagulls and geese who act as warning markers, still one must proceed with caution until out in deeper open water.
