Creepy Saudi Bedtime Stories

Everything about Saudi Arabia is creepy in my opinion.

But regarding the childrens' stories, they remind me of some of the traditional European "fairy tales". Bloody and bizarre.

Maybe there's something about traditional folk-tales world-wide that's like that.

Yep. Though criticism might have gotten the stories cleaned up a tad in later editions, Grimm's fairy tales sported sadistic violence, mutilation, dismemberment; torture; cannibalism; child abuse, starvation, and infanticide; antisemitism; fornication, rape, bestiality, and incest (a king who married his daughter).

Good point.
European tales are often intended to frighten children, to protect them from harm.
If you lived close to a fast flowing river, you might tell your child a lie that something they were afraid of dwelt close to that river.
I might do the same but I would prefer to explain the real danger first.
That's because I'd have the time to do so.
People used to have a lot of children in years gone by, and they used short cuts.

There are a lot of European tales about wicked stepmothers.
Is that a warning about a real danger?
If not, why is it a continual theme?
