Canadian Ingenuity!

Here's a guy in Halifax Nova Scotia who MacGyvered an inverter to the battery of his Chevy Volt hybrid to feed 120 v AC to his appliances, particularly his fridge and freezer.

When the battery goes below a certain preset level, the gas engine automatically starts itself to recharge it. So this guy can keep going until he runs out of gas. And I guess that there are open gas stations in Halifax, which is getting back to normal, so he's in better shape than his neighbors who are having to throw out everything in their fridges.

Right after the storm, about 3/4 of the people in Nova Scotia were without power. Reportedly that's down to about 60,000 people in a province of just under a million. They are talking like everybody's power should be back in about 24 hours.

So much for my lifelong imagining of everyone in Canada having back-up generator systems running on propane tanks or all the electric lines being expensively buried underground.
