So, did you guys know that the average car engine (not hybrid) is only 25 - 30% efficient? That to have an engine operating at 100% efficiency, is pretty much an impossible engine to design/construct? I learned that today on SF Big Grin

I posted a thread about entropy, and this came into the discussion.

Sure did. Inlet temperature over outlet temperature rules the road.

kudos to you confused! Big Grin

An electric car would operate at 85-90% efficiency.

I'm kind of bored with the online hive mentality that seems to be so pervasive. Not here, just in a general sense. I wonder why I don't see this hive mentality offline as much as online. Hmm.

It's much easier for like-minded people to congregate online. They may be all around in real life, but you're not in a setting where everyone is constantly sharing their opinions.

Let's look at electricity then. There's a slight problem that we can't really store very much of it.

Even large power stations have their efficiency governed by the inlet temperature over outlet temperature rule and by the time the electricity generated by them is in a battery in your car the CO2 per mile is (probably) similar or worse than a petrol powered car.

Let's look to nuclear power to provide our base load (no CO2). On a day that is neither too hot nor too cold our nuke stations can power the nation. There's a catch though - you can't turn nuke station on or off because there are bits inside them that have to last for 50 or more years and you really don't want to wear them out by going through any more hot/cold cycles than you can possibly avoid. So, a pleasant day and running on base load. All your renewable energy plant has nothing to do because the nukes are providing the power and there is no way to stop them. In an ideal world you'd run almost entirely on renewables with the occasional blast from fossil fuels when needed. In the less than ideal world you have the economics of renewables distorted by the demands of the nuclear power stations leading to less renewable capacity and greater reliance on fossil fuels to meet demand above base load.

A tangled web to unravel.

Pessimism finally paid off this time for me. I expected a much more dismal final season and conclusion to the show, based on GoT having never been a nice series in that regard. Being built upon one shock-jock event after another (starting with N__ S____'s fate in season one, if B___ S____'s involuntary experiment with flying isn't counted as such in the very first episode).

I certainly didn't expect ALL the remaining Starks to survive, although it looks like none of them will be reproducing apart from possibly Sansa. And even that's not a done deal, since back in 2016 she remarked about Ramsay Bolton: “I can still feel what he did in my body, standing here right now”. That could imply more than just the physical violation, like he may have damaged her organs in the course of his various sadistic sexual abuses.

What's the point of keeping Night's Watch going? Just to give illegitimate, rejected, and abandoned offspring something to do? The Wall has a big hole in it that this era of theirs doesn't have either the engineering or the sorcery to fix. There are no more White Walkers and Night King serving as threat, and the Wildlings are extinct apart from the survivors returning to life behind the Wall at the end. Was Jon Snow really only escorting them further or was that look in his eyes a sign that he was going to go AWOL from Night's Watch and become a Wildling himself? (Thereby escaping the restrictions placed upon him.)

The final episode was rare in that it at least explored the direction of the characters' lives in the aftermath. Often that's not done when the central theme, mystery, etc in a series are wrapped-up. The latter type storylines just abruptly end with parting face shots in the emotional wreckage or flickering glimpses of "life after" -- as if the resolution of the drama was all the audience ever cared about, not the character developments and their outcomes. But then again "epic-scale" sagas might be an exception to that kind of tendency, anyway. "Lord of the Rings" loitered around some in its final installment, too, to what extent the limited time of a movie allows.

i only watched around 20 minutes of one episode many years ago.
it wasnt my thing.
i had, had a near megga fan tell me about the series and it sounded quite interesting, but im not a horro or thriller fan at all and i dont like drama unless its comedy and complex characters.
horror, thriller, drama with a bit of Gore & Sadomasochism thrown in it pushed the buttons of most of the majour audiences by the sound of it.
lots of hot n sexy actors too from what i heard.
i heard there was a big revenge theme around concepts which seemed to be liked by people as a validation of sadism.

from what i read in some comments about the plot change & sudden plot dynamics
...  it sounds to me like there was some big back-room nasty shit that went down.
probably executive funders cutting the budget and a few characters ... maybe women, demanding equal pay (im guessing)
and so the executives canned the series and then used threat of legal punishment against the writers to write the ending.
so the writers sank it in a bloody manner to make a point and avoid being sued to bankruptcy by the executives.

thats what it looks like.

ive been around enough artists over many years to know they wont insult their audience by turning it into shit for them so they walk out feeling scammed & disrespected.

haha Yes, I should have been more pessimistic! Agree about everything you posted in your spoiler. This last season felt Idk...very cliche, especially the series finale. Like every cliche thing you could muster up to place within a fantasy film, that happened in season 8 lol

There's a petition out there demanding a series finale do-over. I might add my name to it.  Big Grin
